Making A Bigger Difference

For those of you who were unable to attend this past weekend’s I Feel Good! Mind, Body and Soul Women’s Conference at Wayne State University, you not only missed a successful, empowering and inspiring event, you also missed the launch of my newest initiative. No worries! I’m going to tell you what it is now.

I am now the first Women’s Cabinet member for the American Lung Association’s LUNG FORCE campaign!

I was surprised to be approached by the American Lung Association, but I am honored to have the opportunity to bring awareness to an issue that impacts the lives of many women. Although I don’t personally suffer from respiratory illnesses, I do have friends, relatives and colleagues who are directly affected. I have witnessed the effects of COPD, lung cancer, asthma and other illnesses, so I understand how important LUNG FORCE is to our community and the health of women everywhere.

The LUNG FORCE Run/Walk Detroit is on the evening of Friday, October 3, 2014, 6:00pm at Belle Isle. The event will include the 5K Run or Walk, yoga, barre and Zumba (starts at 4 pm), lung health information, music and fun! I have set up my team and everywhere is invited to join as a runner, walker, volunteer or as a virtual team member.

As you may know, I believe in living a purpose driven life. Being a business owner for me isn’t solely about making money; it is also about using my talents and influence to make a difference. Joining the Women’s Cabinet of the American Lung Association comes shortly after my Community Partnership with Karmanos Cancer Institute (who are sponsoring LUNG FORCE) and deepens my philanthropic efforts in Metro Detroit. I believe that in order to be an effective leader, I have to lead by example. I can’t tell someone to do something, that I’m not also willing to do. Although I can’t take on every campaign or cause, I do strive to put forth a tremendous amount of effort and dedication to the causes and campaigns that I support. Working with Karmanos and the American Lung Association are important to me because my loved ones have been affected by cancer and respiratory illnesses, and for some of them, these illnesses have resulted in death. Each day one of the blessings I count in my life is my health.

I truly hope that you can join my LUNG FORCE Team and support us, either online or in person, on October 3, 2014.

Detroit’s Hidden Gem for Senior Adults

Sometimes, I like to provide information about things we may not know about that impact our community as a whole.

As you may know, I am a board member at St. Patrick’s Senior Center, which has been serving Detroit since 1973. St. Pat’s is located right behind Orchestra Hall in Midtown Detroit. Every day we provide our members with a hot lunch, field trips, computer classes, dance and choir activities, as well as health, transportation and advocacy services.

I truly believe that St. Pat’s is one of Detroit’s most amazing places and best-kept secrets. As a person who has many senior adults in my family, I support programs that support them. That’s why I’m asking you to help me spread the word in 2014, which is a banner year, as St. Pat’s develops, thanks to a partnership with Detroit Area on Aging, many services that will enable us to support even more people in these challenging economic times.

Here’s how you can help:

  • Make an online donation by visiting our website at http://stpatsrctr.org
  • Like our Facebook page – and tell your friends to like us, too!
  • Attend our festive events throughout the year, including the Spring Irish FestivalFall Musical Palooza or annual Golf Outing.
  • Serve as a volunteer!

If you’d like to experience St. Pat’s firsthand, I invite you to come visit, have lunch, and take a tour. We can set it up at your convenience. I promise that any support you provide will be tremendously helpful and appreciated. You don’t have to be from Detroit to support our senior community or St. Pat’s. Thank you in advance for supporting St. Pat’s Senior Center in Detroit!

St. Pat’s is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization operating in Detroit, Michigan.

Be The Change You Want To See

There’s a saying “you should be the change you want to see in the world”. That is never easy to accomplish. I Feel Good! Mind, Body and Soul Women’s Conference was a huge success on August 17th 2013 at Wayne State University. Super Woman Productions and Publishing received a great deal support and accolades for that event. Our goal was never to make money,  but insteaf to positively impact the lives of young women and adult women across Metro Detroit. Although there were some situations beyond our control, we still rolled with the punches as best we could to carry on the best event possible, to the degree that we set out to do.

As with any situation there is always that one person that sets out to make the event or accomplishment look bad. Those people are the ones sometimes referred to as crabs in a barrel. They are people who are unhappy in their own lives so they make every effort to criticize and make other people unhappy too. You’ve met people like that, I’m sure; they are always looking at the glass as half empty. They are fault finders. Nothing you do will ever please them. One person could consider a situation perfect, but a person like them will always find something wrong no matter what. There’s nothing you can really do about people like that, except to expect them to eventually show up. IFGMBS had such a person show up.

The best part about a fault finder is that they usually are so emotionally disturbed, angry and unhappy to begin with that they trip over themselves and lose sight of the facts. They try to mislead people into believing they are the victim. They make threats against people that they can’t carry out. And when the smoke finally clears you find that everything they said was a lie. There’s always the truth and having the truth helps to counteract a lie. Especially when the truth is documented in writing. When you know that negativity will eventually show up in the form of an unhappy person at some point during your attempt at doing something positive, it allows you to do something they cannot. Be prepared.

Because I know that my good efforts will always be challenged by people who don’t believe in me or what I do or what I’m trying to do, I’m always prepared to deal with people like that. it comes from experience, persistence, and discernment. I can pretty much tell when someone is trouble from the very first time I interact with them. And I was right. This particular woman’s attempt to damage the reputation of Super Woman Productions and Publishing immediately failed.

Other people in a similar situation would probably give up and never want to do something like this again. Fortunately I’m not like other people. I know that doing the right thing is sometimes the most difficult thing to do because it is met with opposition and criticism. I do not let that stop me and neither does my Super Team. We have already set a date for next year’s IFGMBS Women’s Conference. I encourage you to continue to do whatever it is that you do that is positive in your life and for the lives of other, in spite of any opposition you receive. Do not let other peoples’ negative mindset, unhappiness or low self-esteem deter you from your purpose. When you strive to be the change you want to see in the world, like minded people will step up and support you. And if you ever need help trying to counteract the negativity of other people in your pursuit to be the best you possible, feel free to reach out to us here at Super Woman Productions and Publishing. Simply send your question or concern to ask@ superwomanproductions.com, and if we know of any resources that will be helpful to you we will gladly share them. Now go forth and be the change you want to see in the world.

Making History

On March 8, 2013, Super Woman Productions and Publishing will host the first annual Women’s Day Tea in celebration of International Women’s Day. This event’s theme is Sip and Sushi and has been a plan for the last year from the time I was first introduced to the concept of International Women’s Day by a friend of mine who lives in Italy. He informed me that it is celebrated different ways in different cultures, internationally, and even informed me of the Italian tradition celebrated by women on March 8th of every year for as long as he could remember. I immediately began to feel like we (women), particularly in Detroit, were missing out on something fabulous and empowering. So I began to do my research. My Super Team and I then began to determine how best to celebrate the occasion here in Detroit on March 8, 2013. Needless to say, we had some very grand and amazing ideas. As expected, it was turning into a rather large-scale endeavor. Unfortunately, because people aren’t as quick to embrace new ideas in Metro Detroit, we also had to contend with the funding of such a large-scale event. So we decided to trim it down from grand to fabulous. As usual, in my Super World, that resulted in all of the pieces coming together quickly and very well.

Then we ran into a dilemma, completely of my own doing. What do I do about The FabLife Radio Show broadcast for that same night, during that same time? Mista Ecks and I had decided that in celebration of International Women’s Day, on that night, we’d honor the women who were most instrumental in hip hop on the show. We had already contacted the appropriate people to book those guests and had already received positive responses.  How can I be in two places at the same time? My business manager said not to worry because we ‘d just broadcast The FabLife Radio Show from the Women’s Day Tea.

Brilliant!! Problem solved!

We found our ideal location, which is a woman owned business, called Socra Tea Detroit, at 71 Garfield in Midtown Detroit, a few days later. We posted our tickets online and within a week we sold all of our vendor spots to other women business owners. Tickets started selling and inquiries and offers started flowing in. Some offers we’re not able to accept because they cost money that we don’t want to spend. After all one of our goals for the Women’s Day Tea is to raise money towards the cost of the I Feel Good: Mind, Body and Soul Women’s Conference this August; not just give money to other companies and people to do what we can do ourselves at little or no cost. But we were able to accept the majority of offers provided by other women business owners in Metro Detroit to assist them with receiving additional exposure for their businesses through our event.

Women’s Day Tea – Sip and Sushi is a reality!

HERE ARE SOME FUN FACTS:

  • Internationally for 2013, there are over 500 events taking place for International Women’s Day
  • In the United States there are 83 different official events planned for March 8, 2013 in celebration of International Women’s Day.
  • In Michigan there is only one official event planned for International Women’s Day. It is mine.
  • In Detroit, Michigan is there is only one official event planned for International Women’s Day… Also, mine.

I was initially very shocked at the idea that Super Woman Productions and Publishing was the only entity with an official International Women’s Day event in the entire city of Detroit. Then I was really astounded that it is also the only event being held in the entire state of Michigan. Now, many of you know there’s a  big difference between someone throwing words on paper or in a press release (i.e. in celebration of International Women’s Day“) in order to increase their audience, and someone being granted the use of the name/brand/logo of an establishment for their event because it is legitimate. I have been granted use of the name/brand/logo for International Women’s Day because MY EVENT IS THE ONLY OFFICIAL INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY EVENT IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF MICHIGAN. Proof of this can be found by searching the events here → International Women’s Day

Super Woman Productions and Publishing under my leadership has made history in Detroit and it was completely unplanned. Plus, we’re not done. We’re adding additional amenities to Women’s Day Tea, including a live performance by someone who shall remain nameless for a few more days. His performance at Women’s Day Tea is his first performance in Detroit, Michigan. So now we’re making history twice with one event. Of course there are still those who don’t see the value in such an event, have no interest in attending  and don’t much care about what it can do for Detroit as a city. That is fine. They just won’t be present to witness history being made. For those who do attend or participate by making a donation of a raffle item or addition to the gift bags for attendees, they will forever be a part of something amazing and historical that took place in the City of Detroit.

Tickets are still on sale. Come out and support the only OFFICIAL International Women’s Day event in the entire state of Michigan on March 8, 2013. You can buy tickets here.

Come join Super Woman Productions and Publishing in making history.

My Plans For Super World Domination Start Here

I’m working diligently with my best friend to coordinate the events for the I Feel Good: Mind, Body and Soul Women’s Conference. I’m proud to say that the plans are going very well. There are always minor hiccups in any plan when you’re dealing with people, such as schedules and finances, but overall I’m very pleased with what is developing thus far. As with anything I do, I think it can be better. I admit that I have some personal issues to contend with where this conference is concerned. Contrary to what anyone may think, this conference is not just about me.  I don’t want people to think that I’m out for myself in this attempt. It wasn’t even my idea. Yes, it’s my Brand, my image, my reputation and my name associated with it, and I’m going to be held accountable if it’s an epic failure and praised if it is a success. However, this is more about the young women in the community who need to see that women can do more than pose nearly nude in mens magazines, strip at strip clubs and have sex with famous men to become famous and rich. It’s about the young women who unfortunately don’t know better and need to see examples of adult women who are successful, fashionable, educated and talented who didn’t get there because of who their father is, who their stepfather is, who their baby daddy is, or who their husband is – but instead, they climbed ladders and over walls because of who they are as women and what they contribute to this world.  It’s about helping young women to define their own beauty beyond how big their behinds are or aren’t, whether their hair is natural or not and showing them examples of beautiful women who look just like them and come in all shapes, sizes and complexions. It’s about showing them that beautiful women are in every industry and that we possess a multitude of talents and knowledge. It’s about redefining our worth, our image and empowering ourselves, so that even if a young woman decides to pose in a mens magazine she does so knowing the ramifications and she (hopefully) owns the copyright to her photos [everyone won’t do what we think they should all the time, but let’s take baby steps towards something a little more positive].

I want to encourage more woman-ownership, more women in television, more women on reality shows that got to where they are on their own.  There are too many women on television who are only famous because of semen. Yes, that’s what I said. This is not a kiddie website, so let’s be honest. Kim Kardashian, Amber Rose, all of the Basketball Wives, all of the Baseball Wives and all but three cast members of Love and Hip Hop are famous only because of who the men are in their lives. We wouldn’t know who any of them were otherwise.

{Flashback} Remember when women were famous for being talented? Remember when models actually wore clothes in magazines?

I miss those days.

I also want to use this conference to bring more awareness to some of the dangers that young women face and obstacles that they have to endure. We know, but sometimes I feel like we’re too tolerant of what happens to young women as if it’s normal. Young women being raped, abused, kidnapped, killed and going missing is becoming too prevalent. Not just where young Black women or poor young women are concerned. Please don’t think there are color lines drawn here, because there aren’t. This is about woman-kind in general. Our socio-economic and racial differences no longer protect us from harm.

So when I say that I have personal issues where this conference is concerned I truly mean it. This is my Super World. What I do, what I”m working towards in media and what I see possible in this world is personal for me. However, I don’t want my Super World to only have a handful of women in it. I want to help cultivate a generation of Super Women and Super Girls. I want a legacy of a League of Super Women who make a difference in their communities and in the lives of other young women through media and outreach. I want the I Feel Good: Mind, Body and Soul Women’s Conference to grow larger and more popular every year, and last long after I’m no longer here. I take this very personal.

This is MY Super World, but it’s not here just for me. I’m striving for world media domination and I want to build this empire, then pass the torch one day and retire. I’m extremely thankful to everyone stepping up to facilitate workshops and volunteer. We are still in need of more volunteers, we also need financial sponsors, media partners, and vendors who have products and services related to the focus and purpose of the conference. If you’d like information please email us using the Contact Us form on this website or send an email to events@superwomanproductions.com with CONFERENCE  in the subject and provide us with your information and tell us what your interest is (vendor, sponsors, volunteer). A separate website is being developed specifically for the conference in a few weeks. I also need your prayers to keep me focused and energized towards fulfillment of this purpose that is completely in the Master’s Plans. This isn’t easy, not even for Super Woman.

My plans for Super world domination start here, but they don’t end here.
