The Gift of ME

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to YOU!

Happy Birthday to ME!

I am so happy to be alive to celebrate the many achievements I’ve had over the years. First, a moment of transparency: I didn’t give any Christmas gifts this year.

From where I sit, I AM the GIFT.

I have given my friendship, loyalty, knowledge, encouragement throughout this year to others, without expecting anything in return and often without any reciprocation from the receivers. I have invested my own personal funds to provide opportunities and programming for the community in which I reside. I have volunteered my talents. I have given of my time and had it wasted, and I consider my time to be very valuable. I have done a great deal more and sometimes I haven’t even been told ‘thank you‘. In spite of whatever I did or didn’t receive in return, I keep doing for others because I believe in being a blessing to someone else, because I have been blessed. Even those who have been ignored by me were being given the Gift of ME.

As a society, we have gotten so accustomed to working hard all year-long just to put ourselves in debt to make other people happy, that we have lost so much of the meaning of Christmas in the process. Yes, it’s nice to give, but you shouldn’t feel obligated to give on one day a year. If you give of yourself throughout the year to others, whether you know them personally or not, you have done well. I have literally watched people operate under pressure as if they absolutely must buy someone in particular a gift and it must be wrapped and in their hands on Christmas day or the world will come to a screeching halt. I refuse to live my life that way. Anyone who doesn’t appreciate the Gift of ME, doesn’t have to be bothered with me. To me, it’s really that simple.

When you decide that you’re not going to spend your hard earned money for the sole purpose of making others happy, a few things will happen:

1. You’ll have more money

2. You’ll find out who your true friends and loved ones are

3. Because of 1 and 2 you’ll have less stress in your life

4. Because of 3 you’ll be happier and healthier

You’re more than welcome to continue to brave the malls and stores throughout the month of December in an effort to get the best deals, if that is what you want to do. I actually have some investments in those stores, so I thank you in advance for your contribution to my dividends. However, before Christmas comes in 2014, I encourage you to examine more closely WHY you spend the money on the gifts you buy and the people you buy them for. If the purpose is to say ‘thank you’ to someone, there are cards for that and I’ve heard some people are very partial to hearing the words. If the purpose is to impress others, please understand that they may not be impressed or like you because you bought them something anyway. If the purpose is to make yourself feel good, you won’t be feeling so great when that credit card bill comes, or an unexpected bill comes and you don’t have the funds to pay it because you spent money on gifts to give to others.

The best gifts I ever received were items I actually needed, could use to make my life simpler, that would save me money over time, or related to an experience I wanted but might not have had the money or time to get for myself. When shopping for someone next year, keep that in mind: What do they need? What could they use to make their life better or save them time? What might help them save money over time if you buy it for them? What would they like to experience? Gifts that make people’s lives better or even saves them time could be you hiring a house or carpet cleaner for that person. A closet organizer (person or system) is also a great option. A example of product that a person can use to save money would be a drinking water filtration system for someone who buys bottled water or an at home soda machine for someone who drinks soda. I have both and they work great. I love gifts that provide an experience. A gift certificate for the movies, tickets to a play or concert tickets are thoughtful gifts because they provide an experience for a person and often don’t cost a lot of money. Your time is a great gift to give to anyone. Because we have such busy lives and so much technology at our hands, we often let time rush by us and use ‘quick’ means to communication. Calling someone instead of texting them so that you can actually have a conversation with someone is a great gift to give. It shows that you took time out for them and that they matter to you.

I’m 39 years young today. I almost didn’t make it to this age. So I’m thankful just to be here and hearing ‘Happy Birthday‘ is an awesome gift to receive for me today. Today also marks my personal countdown to my next milestone birthday in 2014 when I turn #FabLife40. I don’t want any gifts then either. I just want some of my friends and family to celebrate with me in St. Maarten. Those who can attend, will. Those who can’t attend will miss a fabulous Christmas celebration full of margaritas, palm trees and sandy beaches. Either way, next Christmas, just like this Christmas, everyone will receive the Gift of ME.

By the way, Super Woman Productions and Publishing is the official Media Sponsor for Finding My Way Home on Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Royal Oak Library.

Looking Forward – New Year, New You

There was a time in my life when I was deeply depressed during the holidays. I felt terribly alone and dreaded the entire experience. I realized later in life that those feelings of depression were brought about because I didn’t know my purpose and therefore couldn’t fulfill it. Now I love the holidays. For me it signifies a renewal process. As much as I don’t like snow, or ice, or salt trucks, I know seeing them is a sign of progression of the seasons and the years. Every holiday for the last few years, I have set attainable goals for myself, both personally and professionally. I have achieved each and every one of those goals, along with some I didn’t expect to achieve, such as becoming the 2013 Confident Woman Award recipient.

This holiday isn’t any different. I’m writing my third book. I’m producing and creating more video content. I’m making myself available for speaking engagements going into 2014. We officially have a BBM Channel as of December 2013, we have a mobile app being developed for release in 2014, a Vimeo Channel, an official YouTube Channel (that’s not new, but it’s still cool), and we’ll be producing more online content starting next year. We’re also already scheduling our guests for The FabLife Radio Show, which reached over 43,000 listens and had over 50 subject matter experts and celebrity guests in 2013. We will resume live shows the first Friday of January. I’m growing the Super Woman Brand and I’m looking forward to another new year of growth and progress.

I’ve come a long way and I want to be an example to others that life is truly what you make of it. Many of us have had experiences that haven’t been pleasant, some of us more than our fair share. But instead of looking at every situation as a tragedy, I now look to discover what I’m meant to learn from it. And sometimes what I think is a tragedy is actually a blessing for me. As we go into the holiday season which will close out this year, I’d like for you to look back on some of the situations you’ve experienced this last year. Look at what your role was in the situation, but don’t blame yourself, just accept responsibility for what you did or didn’t do so that if you’re ever in that situation again, you will know better. Apologize to those you have wronged, forgive those who have wronged you, while keeping in mind that you’re not obligated to include them in your life going forward, but closure can be healing. Healing allows you to grow and move forward.

Don’t regret anything for any reason. I’ve learned that regret will hold you hostage if you’re not careful. Everything happens and yes, sometimes we let opportunities pass us by, but if you know you did you best, you shouldn’t  have any regrets. If you know that your regret comes from the fact that you didn’t do your best and you could have done something better, you actually have time to rectify that if you choose to. Sometimes the fear that an opportunity has completely passed us by is the main reason we don’t try. Not trying is the only regret I condone. If you don’t at least try, you will never know if you are able to do better or obtain closure.

Look forward. The past is behind you for a reason. It’s not coming back. So concentrate on the present and the future. Be realistic in your endeavors and goal setting. Everyone can’t be a super model or a professional athlete. Take the time to discover what the Master’s Plan for your life is that includes your talents and abilities, and strive towards cultivating that. Trying to be something other than what you were meant to become is a complete waste of time and energy. Trying to be what someone else is out of envy is also a complete waste of time and energy. Instead put in the work to be the absolute best version of yourself that you can be in 2014 and beyond. Discover what you do best and do that.

That’s my focus  – to be the best version of myself, today, tomorrow and everyday after. It’s my own personal New Year, New You project. I didn’t necessarily plan any of this, and I’ve had to make some very unexpected sacrifices to get this far. I know that more sacrifices will be required of me but in the end, the life I’m meant to live will be well worth it because I will have been a blessing to others in the process.

Thank you for your support of Super Woman Productions and Publishing and I will have a lot more for you in 2014.

Happy Holidays!

Making History

On March 8, 2013, Super Woman Productions and Publishing will host the first annual Women’s Day Tea in celebration of International Women’s Day. This event’s theme is Sip and Sushi and has been a plan for the last year from the time I was first introduced to the concept of International Women’s Day by a friend of mine who lives in Italy. He informed me that it is celebrated different ways in different cultures, internationally, and even informed me of the Italian tradition celebrated by women on March 8th of every year for as long as he could remember. I immediately began to feel like we (women), particularly in Detroit, were missing out on something fabulous and empowering. So I began to do my research. My Super Team and I then began to determine how best to celebrate the occasion here in Detroit on March 8, 2013. Needless to say, we had some very grand and amazing ideas. As expected, it was turning into a rather large-scale endeavor. Unfortunately, because people aren’t as quick to embrace new ideas in Metro Detroit, we also had to contend with the funding of such a large-scale event. So we decided to trim it down from grand to fabulous. As usual, in my Super World, that resulted in all of the pieces coming together quickly and very well.

Then we ran into a dilemma, completely of my own doing. What do I do about The FabLife Radio Show broadcast for that same night, during that same time? Mista Ecks and I had decided that in celebration of International Women’s Day, on that night, we’d honor the women who were most instrumental in hip hop on the show. We had already contacted the appropriate people to book those guests and had already received positive responses.  How can I be in two places at the same time? My business manager said not to worry because we ‘d just broadcast The FabLife Radio Show from the Women’s Day Tea.

Brilliant!! Problem solved!

We found our ideal location, which is a woman owned business, called Socra Tea Detroit, at 71 Garfield in Midtown Detroit, a few days later. We posted our tickets online and within a week we sold all of our vendor spots to other women business owners. Tickets started selling and inquiries and offers started flowing in. Some offers we’re not able to accept because they cost money that we don’t want to spend. After all one of our goals for the Women’s Day Tea is to raise money towards the cost of the I Feel Good: Mind, Body and Soul Women’s Conference this August; not just give money to other companies and people to do what we can do ourselves at little or no cost. But we were able to accept the majority of offers provided by other women business owners in Metro Detroit to assist them with receiving additional exposure for their businesses through our event.

Women’s Day Tea – Sip and Sushi is a reality!

HERE ARE SOME FUN FACTS:

  • Internationally for 2013, there are over 500 events taking place for International Women’s Day
  • In the United States there are 83 different official events planned for March 8, 2013 in celebration of International Women’s Day.
  • In Michigan there is only one official event planned for International Women’s Day. It is mine.
  • In Detroit, Michigan is there is only one official event planned for International Women’s Day… Also, mine.

I was initially very shocked at the idea that Super Woman Productions and Publishing was the only entity with an official International Women’s Day event in the entire city of Detroit. Then I was really astounded that it is also the only event being held in the entire state of Michigan. Now, many of you know there’s a  big difference between someone throwing words on paper or in a press release (i.e. in celebration of International Women’s Day“) in order to increase their audience, and someone being granted the use of the name/brand/logo of an establishment for their event because it is legitimate. I have been granted use of the name/brand/logo for International Women’s Day because MY EVENT IS THE ONLY OFFICIAL INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY EVENT IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF MICHIGAN. Proof of this can be found by searching the events here → International Women’s Day

Super Woman Productions and Publishing under my leadership has made history in Detroit and it was completely unplanned. Plus, we’re not done. We’re adding additional amenities to Women’s Day Tea, including a live performance by someone who shall remain nameless for a few more days. His performance at Women’s Day Tea is his first performance in Detroit, Michigan. So now we’re making history twice with one event. Of course there are still those who don’t see the value in such an event, have no interest in attending  and don’t much care about what it can do for Detroit as a city. That is fine. They just won’t be present to witness history being made. For those who do attend or participate by making a donation of a raffle item or addition to the gift bags for attendees, they will forever be a part of something amazing and historical that took place in the City of Detroit.

Tickets are still on sale. Come out and support the only OFFICIAL International Women’s Day event in the entire state of Michigan on March 8, 2013. You can buy tickets here.

Come join Super Woman Productions and Publishing in making history.

Progress On Purpose

This year has started off surprisingly and pleasantly well for Super Woman Productions and Publishing. I have been pleased to include three phenomenal women to the Super Team in different capacities. I’m in the middle of an interview frenzy for interns to fill positions within the company that are structured for long-term opportunities. The FabLife Radio Show is showing consistent listeners each week with some significant growth as well. On March 8, 2013 we’re celebrating International Women’s Day and we have celebrity guests that are going to be on the show. We’re preparing for the launch of FabLife Apparel and Accessories this year and the fabulous ad campaign that will accompany it. I now also write a column for Thrive Detroit Street Newspaper which is sold at Source Books and D:Hive monthly. The February/March issue is available at both locations now for $1 per copy.

In this the fifth year since the birth of my brain child, I can say that I am truly happy and that I have learned how to enjoy the small accomplishments just as much as the larger ones.

Of course what I do isn’t easy (although I’m told I make it look like it is) and there are small challenges. But all of the challenges are a learning experience, as well as strength and character building exercises. Cultivating anything and doing it well, requires a lot of time, patience, persistence and work. People who blow up over night, are often forgotten about just as quickly. Where some people may feel that I’m not more “popular” because I have boundaries that I refuse to cross just for the sake of pleasing others, I’m perfectly comfortable with my current level of “popularity“. It allows me to maintain a life that I can enjoy without people being witness to my every move…for now.

I have learned throughout this process (because that’s really what it is) that rejection and change are inevitable. I look at rejection as a necessary occurrence for people who I don’t need to exit stage left, so that the right people can be brought into my Super World. That often results in very positive change because the people who left had their own conflicting agendas. Anyone who tells me ‘no’ today, will one day beg to work with me. Not because I’m so much better than anyone else, but simply because everything that is taking place in my Super World is mapped out in the Master’s Plan.

It’s going to happen regardless of what anyone else thinks, says or feels.

So much of what I’ve achieved is not because of me; it is in spite of me. My accomplishments are in spite of me not having a degree. My accomplishments are in spite of me not having the understanding or acceptance of others (friends, family and peers). My accomplishments are in spite of me not being a reality TV star. My accomplishments are in spite of me not getting some of the opportunities I wanted to showcase my talents to others. Yet, I’m still here. I’m still growing. My business is still expanding. While others have yet to finish the same the projects that they told me ‘no’ to, I’m getting more projects of my own to work on. Daily new people all over the country (and in some corners of the world) organically discover Super Woman Productions and Publishing and are exposed to what I do.

One of the biggest complaints I hear from people is how “others” are able to progress in society because they have money or opportunities given to them that people of color (particularly Black people) don’t have access to. I disagree with that. I believe that all progress is deeply rooted in the desire of the individual or group of people. Sometimes in order to experience progress, an individual must put distance between themselves and the group because the group isn’t growing or supporting the process. Progress is intentional. It is conscious. It is strategic. It comes from having a plan and working that plan. It comes from being diligent and looking for ways to improve. It’s not dependent on or hindered by anyone or anything else, unless you allow it to be. So in your new year look at what you want to do, and determine what you need to do better in order to get there instead of looking for excuses not to get there. It doesn’t matter how much time it takes. Improve your time management skills. Time is an investment that pays off well if used wisely.

Make your progress intentional.

Make your progress conscious.

Make your progress strategic.

Progress on purpose.

Your success is waiting.

Happy New Prosperous Year!

It’s a new year, full of new possibilities!

2012 resulted in a lot of growth for me personally, professionally and for the Super Woman Brand. Change is good, but it isn’t always easy. I’m finally at a place where I can actually see things coming together. And it’s a beautiful sight to behold. If nothing else, I’ve learned a lot about patience and the rewards that come about from being more patient.

In 2012 I had to make a lot of hard decisions also. More proof that change isn’t always easy. Letting go and letting God work in your life can be very challenging. I stepped deeper into my faith and learned how to walk in it more as well. I don’t let people deter me or determine me with their own personal agendas. And many people have tried…and failed.

In 2012 I had to cut a lot of people from my life. Well, honestly it wasn’t always me. Most of the time it was God weeding my garden and taking out the trash when He was done. Everyone isn’t meant to reap the benefits of my work, my creativity or the life that the Master’s Plan is resulting in. God made sure they left and that they are not missed. Some people who were cut off before 2012 tried to come back in 2012. They learned that they were no longer welcome in my Super World.

I ended 2012 on a very high note. And this is just the beginning!

2013 has so much to offer. The FabLife Radio Show is doing very well and will improve tremendously going into the new year. We have new guests scheduled and returning guests who enjoyed being on the show from 2012. I’m preparing to fully launch FabLife Apparel and Accessories in 2013. The Official Super Woman YouTube Channel will be home of new digital video content. I suggest that you subscribe so that you’ll receive information as its posted online. I’m increasing my workforce to allow young people to gain experience in their fields of study. It has taken almost a year to find the best of the best, but it has been well worth it. Many additional opportunities have presented themselves in my career for 2013 and are in negotiations. As all of my plans become finalized Super Fans will be the first to know.

Some of my new opportunities are a result of my 2012 goals that were set and worked on by my Super Manager and I. So they didn’t just fall out of the sky like Kryptonite and they aren’t just because I’m cute. They were a part of a plan. Proof that proper planning produces prosperity.

As I begin my 2013 with a very long list of goals to accomplish and many already near completion, I hope that you will also set goals for yourself. When setting your goals, make sure that you are patient with yourself and the processes. Everything doesn’t happen overnight or by magic for everyone. People who have it the easiest often don’t last long and lack true substance. That is true for everything from weight loss to increasing your earning potential. In anything you do, you want to strive for longevity. Longevity takes planning, productivity, prayer and patience. Those are just a few of the requirements, not all of them.

Happy New Prosperous Year, Super Fans! Let’s make 2013 Fabulous!
